Bak kut teh, mai bak

The other day, we went to this place in Air Itam and they are famous for their bak kut teh. So, what does a person who is not eating meat doing at a bak kut teh place? Well, what to do….my family is eating.

bak kut teh

So, I went to order, Bak kut teh, mai bak. (translation : pork bones tea, don’t want meat) And the shop owner ask, “Ai pak lai boh, ai too tor, too boey leh?” (translated : Do you want innards, i.e. kidney and liver? Pig’s stomach? Pig’s tail?”

I felt kind of silly and told him, “I want vegetarian one. Only mushrooms and soya bean sticks.” Oh boy, I felt so embarrassed. The people there must think I am one crazy Buddhist who got her brains screwed wrongly. You see, some Buddhists are vegetarians and they don’t take garlic, onion and any foods that are tainted with animals in their cooking.

*sigh* It is so hard to explain to people that I am just refraining from meats. I don’t care if the soup is cooked with a whole pig. As long as I am not chewing on those oh so, yummy piggie. Then, I am satisfied with my own resolution to ‘no meat and seafoods for 40 days’.

cut chillies

It is no fun not eating liver. I know liver is very, very bad. But sometimes, I love a bowl of pig’s liver with my bak kut teh. I enjoy it probably for the iron content. I can just imagine feeling so iron-y because of the liver and won’t faint if I have my period. LOL. I had to flavour my rice with lots of garlic and cut chillies to make my taukua, tek gar kee, mushrooms and taupok more palatable.

Sigh….10 days gone. Another 30 days to go…

auntioe!! that’s not the best place for bah kut teh anymore. There’s a stall near the dato keramat market. If you turn out from lorong kulit and go towards say por keo at night, you’ll see the stall next to the masjid (SO ironic). Their soup is not dark in colour but every bit as herby and flavourful as the one at Air Itam. We all call this place Loo Foo tze Bah Kut Teh but I dunno it’s real name. You gotta try the soup there, and eat that with eoo phnooi (oil rice). they don’t have yam rice and the oil rice is so much nicer. Also, ask for their herb tau kua. After eating there, you can terus go to heaven.
