Chee Cheong Fun – Penang style

My school teacher taught us this song. Not sure why got this chee cheong fun song. I love chee cheong fun anyway. But I hate rojak though they have almost the same sauce. The reason I hate rojak is because I am so used to eating soft, warm chee cheong fun with the heh-ko and therefore, found eating fruits a little weird.
Chee cheong fun varied from state to state and also countries. In Penang, we have these thin layer of rice flour steamed and then rolled up. A sticky, smelly sauce of heh-ko or prawn paste is poured on it and added with some chili paste and sesame seeds. Usually, some fried onions are sprinkled on it too.
Whilst in Teluk Intan and Ipoh, they use the same flour rolls but instead of using the sticky heh-ko, they use some soya sauce. And in Hong Kong (also available as dim sum in Malaysia), they put some prawns and some char siew (bbq meat) in between the layers of flour.
The best chee cheong fun that I like is from New Lane, available at night. It is the stretch of hawkers near Sunway Hotel. The stall operated by one midget woman is the saltier version (nicer) and another one, the sweeter version.
It’s sauce is the stinkiest thing on earth and if you are not careful and has some dropped on your hands, nothing can wash away the smell! Stinky but nice.

I prefer “Wu Tao Gou” more than Chee Cheong Fun. But Chee Cheong Fun I also kinda like to eat, if there is no yam cake.
I don’t like the Hong Kong style one. Very cheat money, just add in 3-4 small piece of char siew that you cant even see if u stand 1 meter away, add in 1 or 2 half chopped prawns and charged u RM2 for a plate.
Why u dun like the sauce ah? That smelly meh? Hmm, I supposed you just cant tahan the smell. Chee Cheong Fun is not easy to make. Need skill to roll into the exact thickness and the thing have to be tender and well, a little elastic. So far, I still can’t find the proper recipe or technique to make it.
Hmm, come to think of it, Bear Hill macam no chee cheong fun like the one in ur photo leh.

the chee cheong fun that I had in Perak last time, was they oso used curry gravy… Which I think is compatible to the chee cheong fun itself.

I love the Ipoh type best. I don’t mind the Penang type provided they don’t put in the har-ko (too strong for me), and I also don’t mind the so-called hongkong type that they sell at dimsum eateries, except that they are always made too thin. New Lane is fine, but there’s ‘politics’ there: hawkers on one side of the road are not allowed to bring food to the other, etc, and so they give it to you in a disposable plate, and charge you for that! I BEG TO DIFFER!
The best chee-cheong-fun is the one at Macalister Lane that sells in the morning, or, failing which, is the one in Chowrasta market (also in the mornings only). I swear it beats the heck out of the one in New Lane, which has somewhat lost out slightly. I used to love that one, but in recent years, he’s getting a bit kiam siap with the “mua”. Anyway, there’s also the Macalister Lane “branch” shop at Sun City, Fettes Park which sells at night.
How do I know all this? I am a chee cheong fun (Penang style only) connoisseur!! And I must have at least “lak teow” (6 rolls) in one sitting when I go back to Penang. “Heh koh kah huan chio nya – mai thnee chneow…” (Prawn paste and chilli only, no sweet sauce)… eheheh
