Eggplants

terung

I just love this! Fat, huge, spongy eggplants that I bought from the supermarket. It is labelled Japanese eggplant. This is the first time I bought them and therefore, couldn’t resist taking photos from all angles.

However, a check on the internet at The Cook’s Thesaurus confirmed that this is not the Japanese version but looks like the American or Italian version. Hmmmm? Doesn’t matter really.

The websites have a huge library of eggplants photos and they are so cute. Do take a look at the various colours, sizes and shapes. Even the pea size brinjals are featured there.

Do you know that you can pick the sex of the eggplant by looking at it’s bottom? Here’s what The Cook’s Thesaurus said. I never knew that. Amusing.

Male eggplants tend to have fewer seeds, and are therefore less bitter than female eggplants. To sex an eggplant, look at the indentation at bottom. If it’s deep and shaped like a dash, it’s a female. If it’s shallow and round, it’s a male.

Did the website say why an “eggplant” is called an “eggplant”? I see the plant, but where does the egg come in?

Yes, these are Italian eggplants, and also the type which one can buy easily in U.S. markets.

I loove egg plants in every form. Yea the big one is the average North American eggplant. The Japanese one is pretty small and oval shape. We also get fat tubby striated Italian ( or maybe Sicilian ) and White Dutch ones here. Some definitely look like white eggs. Grilled eggplanst make good sandwiches. My elder aunts always told me - you watch , you eat too much eggplants- when you’re old you’re gonna have pains all over…
