Foods for that rosy cheeks kids
A blog reader saw my son’s photo and asked me what I fed him that gives that rosy cheeks. So, let me share a few of his favourite foods.
PASTA
He loves pasta and gets very excited when he smells that I am preparing it. He would ran to the kitchen and screamed in delight, “Mommy is making pasta today!” He knows from the fragrance of the garlic and bacon in melted butter.
FRIED CHICKEN
He also loves fried chicken drumsticks and can finish three pieces of the smaller chicken thighs if I allowed it. He will give me the goofy look and puppy eyes after the second piece and pretend to praise my cooking. Then, I know he is trying to get me to give him another piece. He knows eating too much fried chicken is not healthy and moreover, he needs to leave some for his brothers and us. Normally, I gave him and let him have my share.
SIMPLE SOUP AND WHITE RICE
He is the typical Chinese kid who must have rice daily. So, what I normally cook is a pot of soup with some vegetables he like and serve it with white rice, making it like a porridge.

My theory is never force feed our children with things they hate like green vegetables, fish or anything that they find distasteful. For example, my son hates fish and never eat it. When he was a baby, he would puke if I cook his baby food with fish. My reason is it is better to let them have foods they fancy than having them reject a plate of food that we deem ‘balance’ but they hate. Children seem to have that instinct to eat the food groups they need at different ages. Example, sometimes they need more protein and they will demand for meats and eggs dishes. Sometimes, their bodies need carbo and they will go for high carb foods. The key is never be too demanding on them and let them lead instead of us dictating.
My son is not only growing well, he is growing healthily. He has ample of exercise like playing badminton, swimming, running in the park and basketball everyday. Then, he is also boisterous and plays non-stop with his older brothers. My son’s doctor who is also a good friend remarked that he hardly see him in his clinic anymore and we only meet up in church. That’s a good sign. A great difference from my eldest son where I spent almost a month each year in hospitals and clinics, tending to him.
