Green radish Chinese soup

green radish

The vegetable seller in Pulau Tikus market introduced me to this green radish. I have never seen nor eaten them before this. So, I bought one to try to make radish soup. It does look lovely with the green colour, yes?

The taste is almost like the white radish but it doesn’t have that strong ‘earthy’ smell. I used a few pieces of dried tangerine skin and boil the soup with pork ribs and garlic.

The radish looks darkish and the cooked soup doesn’t look that flattering. So, I didn’t bother to take a photo because the green colour turned a dull brownish colour after being boiled.

This is the only way I know how to cook white radish. I have tried making radish cake before but it was too much of a chore, grating the radish so I never do it after one try.

Anyone has other ideas to prepare white radish?

You can stew white radish together with carrot (shred) and add some dried cuttlefish or dried shrimps. Lovely stew to go with rice.

What an amazing thing. A green radish! It is strange and beautiful. In Cambodia, the big white radish is called moeum chai tao and is used in salads (I posted one at http:tamarindtrees.net yesterday) and in pickles (I’m posting one today!).
