Gurney Plaza
In Penang, there seems to be only one shopping mall to hang around. Gurney Plaza. Where all the branded goods are and where all the beautiful people hang.
It has all most of the bigger names eating outlets. Well, at least to Penang. Starbucks, CoffeeBeans, Dome, Fish & Co, Sushi King, Secret Recipe….the usual chains of restaurants.
One can stay indoors, in the cold comfort of the air-conditioned restaurants or outside along the side-walks. In a tropical country like Malaysia, one cannot do without the air-con. However, it is hip to sit outside and pretend the heat doesn’t bother so much, isn’t it?
On weekends, there is a flea-market selling all sorts of stuffs. You can buy albino phytons, antiques, rabbits, thousands of RM dogs and cats and also accessories and handmade shoes. Those dresses hanging there are batiks, which are made from a handmade printed cloths from Malaysia.
This shop is just opened. I had been eating their cheese-cake in KL (the shop is in KLCC, outside of Isetan Jusco). Have you tried Uncle Miki’s cheesecake? I think it is RM14 for each cake. Very light and fluffy cheese-cake. When I got my hands on one, I will take the photo of the cheese-cake, ok?
So, if you are in Penang, remember that there is only one shopping mall worth hanging around. Gurney Plaza.

you are soooo right! but doesn’t it seem like the newest mall/club/restaurant in penang is always THE place to be? it’s a small island, can’t run far and can’t hide!

Rodney - This one high-class flea market like those at Mont Kiara. Thousand dollars dogs and cats, not pasar malam stuff. But GP got a big side-walk for that. Only thing is it is hot.
Toxic - No more anchor tenant so business dropped.

I can’t help but smile when you mentioned that there’s only one mall in Penang… pathetic but true… This is the only place that I hang out whenever I’m back to Penang.
