I have seen this meme floating around the blogsphere for a while and finally, PabloPablo of Hochiak!DeliciousAsianFood.com passed to me. It is a nice change from talking about foods to talking about what goes on secretly in my kitchen. So, let’s take a peek:
1. The evil MSG!
I grew up with MSG. Mom would buy them often. However, I managed to reduce the usage to only meat dishes and soups and curries. You just can’t get the right taste without a dash of it. I figure that if I eat less and cook more at home, that little white cyrstal is not going to do much harm as those people who eat out all the time. And nope, my head of hair is still very healthy.
2. First impression gone haywire
I had made two blunders. The first time I cooked for my ex-bf’s mother, I put too much salt in the kailan stir fry. The second time I cooked for my other bf’s mother (who was my mother-in-law), she said my tauyewbak (stewed belly pork in soya sauce) was too sweet. So, both times of first impression failed. I wonder if there is any future mothers to pleased. LOL. I want to make it third time right.
3. I can cook since age 10
I am a DIY person and had started cooking my own school meals since I was 10 years old. I would fried rice and bring for school.
4. I kill wild animals for food
Monitor lizards and paddy frogs have been slaughtered by me by the time I was 12 years old. I know this sounds bizzare now but those were the good old days when there were plenty of them running around the paddy fields and around my home.
5. Missing mom’s cooking
The part I missed most after my mom’s death was her festive dishes. The first year she was gone, Chinese New Year was almost unbearable without all her loud voices commanding us what to do. Until today, I still keep cooking most of the dishes because it makes me closer to her,in memories. That is probably why I like to cook. Most of the recipes shared here are mom’s cooking.
I will tag a few bloggers later on..

(February 13, 2007 - 9:35 am)I agree with you for No.5. Eventhough my late mom was not a great cook, but some of her food is her signature style. Once a while or during hari raya, I will try to cook the food just the way she used to do and let my kids taste the food that grandma used to cook…..
