Reminder - Dongzhi/ 冬至 / winter solstice/tang chek festival on 22nd December
I was going through my old photos and found this photo of the tang yuen we made in 2004. It is that time of the year again when the Chinese, irrespective of their faiths, celebrate the Winter Solstice. Even in my church, the Chinese do acknowledge this day with a feast for the family as it is a meaningful celebration.
Can you see the horrid colours of my tang yuen boiling in the hot water? Those are my sons’ creation. They will mix blue, green, white to make the globe seen from space. When it comes to rolling tang yuen, there is no rules for them. This is so unlike the time when I was small where the old, old grannies will nag and nag us kids to make sure the tang yuens were round and perfect.
So, folks - keep December 22nd every year for your family. Have a dinner together. Take some rice balls in sugar syrup. Keep the tradition because tradition is all we Chinese have to keep. Don’t let it disappear. My old post in December 2004 on making tang yuen.

Ahh… I forgot that it’s going to be dongzhi soon. When you’re in a western country like Australia in December you get caught up with Christmas that you forget your Chinese traditions. I will make sure that my friends and I have some tang yuan during the day, so thanks so much for reminding me!
