Review : Japin giant bowl of Udon

Udon with pork and egg

Look at the mammoth size bowl!  I always feel guilty eating Japanese noodle because of the huge bowl they use to serve their ramen and udon.  It looks like it is enough to feed a whole family. (you can click on the photo to get a bigger size pic)
Got this udon with their special soup from Japin Noodle.  They used to be located at the basement in Gurney Plaza but had just moved to the 3rd floor in Island Plaza.  I had ate there several times because I like the no frills, no fuss, no crowd, good service place. I had lunch there today and several Japanese families, including the old couple in the photo above were eating there.  So, I suppose, the food quality is good enough for Japanese, and hence, of certain standard.

I have never ordered or tasted any other ramen, udon, rice or the side dishes of gyoza dumplings from them etc because the whole bowl is enough to last me from lunch to dinner.   I like  this thick soup with slices of pork (but now they had made them into thick pieces) and a soft-boiled egg.   Cost RM17++.  Another worthy dish is their spicy noddle.  Compare to the other mid-price Japanese restaurants, I like Japin because their noodle doesn’t have those annoying cabbages, carrots, radishes, crabsticks etc.  It is a chore to pick out those vegetables, isn’t it?

Their spanking new restaurant.  Just moved in on 1st August.  Check out the place if you want a fast and quick bowl of Japanese noodle minus the fuss.  They only serve noodles, rices, side dishes like dumplings and dessert.  No sushi.  Non halal, too.

The bowl of ramen looked nice. 🙂 I’ve been to some jap restaurants who serves very big bowl of ramen too. 🙂 But some hor, big bowl but little stuffs inside. May I know what’s the semi-circle brownish kinda look thingy on the bowl of the ramen (on the right)? Some sort of braised egg or pork’s skin? 😛 Just curious.

    Hi Lilian,

I stumbled onto this site because I was looking for (what else?) a good place to dine out while back in Penang.

For a place with a reputation for good food, it seems that there is scarcity of good restaurants in Penang. It seems Penangites do not rate ambience too highly and prefer value. Perhaps that’s why some restaurants don’t stay around too long and why street food is still very popular. Time Magazine had the same opition voted it best in Asia.

    But your site did reveal

But your site did reveal a number of places that I didn’t know about as I am working in KL. And the photos are something to drool over! So for Penangites living outside Penang, maybe all of you could post some comments on the food you miss the most!

[…] Heh, I went to lunch alone and ate all the above, leaving clean plates.  Anyway, there are only three prawns and six small gyozas so I am not that guilty.    Trust me, it is less sinful than a huge bowl of udon with slices of Japanese fatty ham.  Had that at Japin Noodle on the 3rd floor of Island Plaza.
