Where to find cheap BUT nice hotels in Penang?

Someone asked me for recommendations for budget hotels in Penang and I am stumped. I thought that Sunway and Cititel will be decent enough but apparently, their rates are RM195 per room which is beyond the budget. Frankly, it is awfully expensive if you ask me. I get a nice, big deluxe room in Cititel Midvalley for only RM205 nett. So, it is rather expensive for Penang Cititel to charge RM195.

So, anyone can recommend a decent place suitable for a young family with children? It is funny how I know about other states hotels but clueless about local hotels here.

Sunway Penang is hopeless when it comes to service. Had an unpleasant experience late last year where they over-booked.

Cititel Penang is in a good location. You will find a few budget hotels closer to RM100 per day along the same stretch.

I miss eating in Penang 🙁

I think it’s more value for money to stay in an apartment compared to a hotel in Penang. He can google “Apartment reviews Penang” and he can get some reviews to make his decisions.

I think u can try Good Hope Inn located along Kelawai Road but just a stone throw away fr Gurney Drive…I always pass by tht area & the rates are around RM50-60 but am not sure if they serve breakfast

Apartment stays are expensive…At least RM300 and above….If not mistaken Oriental Hotel is cheap. If not mistaken RM60 pernight or sumthing. My fren works there. She say the room’s okay.

    (June 25, 2007 - 9:28 am)

Jian – Thanks ar. I will try to check with Oriental Hotel

Earl-ku – SOrry but my budget is not Rm200 lor. I am actually looking at half of that if possible or below RM150.

Anybody knows about Hotel Malaysia and Grand Continental ? Good or not in terms of location and value for money.

    (June 25, 2007 - 11:42 am)

    Platinum Girl

The above 2 hotels are located in the begiining of Penang road….just a stonoe throw away fr UPR(Upper Penang Rd) night spots….price wise…I am not sure but should be approx RM100/nite…Hotel Grand Con should ve better since they recently renovated….There is a ncie rest called Salsa at the ground flr of the hotel…food is nice but not cheap

    (June 25, 2007 - 2:22 pm)

I stayed in Continental b4. It was okay lar…but so long ady dunno still okay annot…kinda expensive i remember. But thats near komtar. 5 minute walk away from Gama. Oh the Oriental Hotel is just a stone’s throw away…just like EFC said.

    (June 25, 2007 - 3:10 pm)

EvertonFC- but Lilian says that GrandCon is located in lauyeah place wor

Hmmm. I still waiting for email response from Oriental.

Oriental and Hotel Malaysia, which one better ah ?

    (June 26, 2007 - 12:41 pm)

    Platinum Girl

My mistake. The hotel located in Pen Road is Continental not Grand Con which is located near KOMTAR

I think Malaysia should be better than Oriental as I see many tourists bussess always drop the tourits off at either Continental or Malaysia

    (June 26, 2007 - 7:58 pm)

I do believe that cititel hotel is going for RM100 per nite for a standard room that comes with either a 1 queensize bed or 2 single bed. But this offer is only for those who make booking via their website. I did this booking in Feb of this year so unless they changed the pricing, cititel is the best place to stay at.

    (June 27, 2007 - 12:59 am)

Yeah Malaysia has loads of tourist. Oriental as well. Malaysia is slightly more expensive as well as a 3 star hotel. My fren told me. Anyway its ur choice : )

    (June 27, 2007 - 3:17 pm)

    Thanks all.

Help me decide between Hotel Malaysia and Hotel Continental. Which one is better?

Might be staying in just 1 hotel or 2 hotels …

Who wants to bring me go sightseeing around Penang? LoL

    (June 27, 2007 - 3:18 pm)

Oh yeah about Oriental Hotel ..

Jian, can you help ask you friend, can extend checkout to 6pm without extra charge or not? Thanks

    (June 27, 2007 - 4:26 pm)

lolz sorry lar…my fren not the boss there : P According to her, needs addition charge for 1/2 day, that is RM46.

She also said there is a Penang 1 day tour for RM65 which they could arrange for u. Besides that, they can help u get tix to Langkawi, bus tix, quite a lot of stuff. Even sewa kereta.

    : )

    (June 28, 2007 - 11:33 am)

Jian – Ok. Still trying to negotiate for no-charge extended checkout 😛
