Things I like :
– high roof and very airy
– clean (well at least it is because it is new)
– lots of food varieties
– parking available
– no more perching on broken chairs by the drain side
Things I dislike :
– lots of lotteries seller. In fact, there are 6 of them within the 30 minutes I was there;
– lots of don’t know real or fake charity bodies asking for donations;
– lots of don’t know real or fake charity bodies asking for donations and bringing mentally and physically challenged folks to limp around;
– people selling wild honey going from table to table
I DISLIKE turning away six lotteries sellers, three different groups of dubious charitable organisation folks selling toothbrushes and one woman who brings around a huge charity boxes with some don’t know fake or real Government appointed letters – in between mouthfuls of food. I can choke on the pieces of squids if I keep shaking my head like that when I have food in my mouth.
HELLO!!!!! I am there to eat, ok? I am not in the mood for charity, ok? I am not supposed to buy lotteries because it constitute gambling and my faith doesn’t allow that, ok?
Gee…it spoils my mood and that’s all I have to review about the place. Thank you for listening. And I hope the management of the spanking new hawker centre does something to these pesky people. No doubt they are people in need but dude, it is a place for tourists as well and I don’t think they find it it amusing if people keeping shoving lotteries ticket into their faces when they were trying to savour the foods of Penang.
If you ask me, the ais-kacang and cendol across the road, in the old kopitiam is much better. I like the cendol there because they uses small, red beans and not kidney beans.

During my school days always ate at Mee Sultan at Swatow Lane (the shop was beside the house). That was 20 over years ago. I’ve been working overseas for the past 15 years and last week (31st May ’07) was back in Penang. I went to find Mee Sultan, and they have moved from Swatow Lane to Jalan Bawasah (from the banner displayed at the old place). Jalan Bawasah is just around the corner located behind Giant Supermarket (old Penang Plaza) and Dorset Hotel (old Sheraton Hotel). The mee rebus and mee goreng still tasted as good as it was 20 years ago.
Now what confusing me is that from a few web sites states that Mee Sultan is located at the New World Park Hawker center. I am trying to establish
(1) Is there two Mee Sultan? One at New World Park and one at Jalan Bawasah?
(2) Or they have moved Swatow Lane to New World Park then move again to Jalan Bawasah? The Jalan Bawasah was opened 3 months ago.
I think the Jalan Bawasah one is the Mee Sultan that originally from Swatow lane that I always have when I was a kid (as stated from the banner at the old swatow lane location and also my taste bud he he he)

My son (who’s 5) swears by his chinese fried rice, sweet sour chicken n taufu. We’re off to penang early next month and i’ve taken down all the places that u’ve mentioned for gd penang hawker food. I especially love Har Mee and Wan Tan Mee. Just wanted to thank you for all the wonderfull recipes and tips u’ve given. Will also definetly be making a pit stop at cooking Island for some essential purchases. 🙂

(January 21, 2008 - 3:12 pm)I am also a fan of Mee Sultan, the original by the road side one. Yes they have moved, but to where i do not know. But since most of the hawkers of Swatow lane moved to New World food court, I went there to seek Mee Sultan. Let me tell you it is not the same, moist fried mee goreng mamak. The cook was much much younger than the original mamak cook. However there is another Mee Sultan, in a lane just behind Giant, probably Jalan Bawasah as one reader pointed out – located in a proper shoplot restaurant. Now this one is the real thing, fried slightly moist and with the sweet, pedas taste of Mee Sultan. I was also informed that another good mee goreng mamak is just opposite this restaurant and it is called Mee Goreng CRC. Also equally good, maybe better?

(April 15, 2008 - 3:02 am)Thank you Lillian for the Penang hawker food blogs. They sure bring back early childhood memories. I used to frequent the New World Park during the 1960’s and early 1970’s. I remember there used to be a Globe and Lido cinema, and a couple of performing halls for Chinese opera, etc. And of course food stalls around. I’m glad Swatow Lane is given a new lease of life after the closure of NWP in the mid 70’s? Left Penang for the UK in 1976, and sure feels nostalgic surfing your food haven pages.
Thank you for the write ups and great photos of the dishes. I like your description of the “lansi” wan ton mee seller at Caunterhall flats. I used to live at Trengganu Road, and attend PFS. It’s true, I’ve come across a lot of haughty hawker food sellers in Penang when their business are thriving and popular. God bless them, it makes Penang so unique and interesting as far as food is concerned.
